Indulging a passion

John Berwald has been dealing in Chinese Ceramics for over thirty years, having had galleries in both London and New York. For many of those years he has been indulging his passion for collecting Modern British paintings and sculpture. Seeing these two areas of art from different cultures and eras compliment each other so well has encouraged John to now deal in both together and hopes that his clients will enjoy seeing this juxtaposition of art at his Mayfair gallery.

On the Chinese side John Berwald specialises in Chinese ceramics, sculpture and works of art from the Han through to the Qing dynasty. From the earlier periods the company has an extensive selection of glazed and painted vessels and figures. From the later periods the emphasis is on famille verte and blue and white from the Kangxi and Transitional periods and Imperial porcelain.

John Berwald has sold pieces to many international museums including the Metropolitan Museum New York and the Peabody Museum in Essex, Massachusetts. We have helped to form some of the world finest collections of Chinese art especially in the area of 17th century porcelain.

We will now be using our wealth of experience gained over the last thirty years to provide the same high level of service and expertise to clients in the world of Modern British art and very much look forward to helping add to clients’ collections and indeed helping form new collections.

We will keep a very select stock of Modern British paintings and sculpture mostly from the 50’s and 60’s from London to St. Ives. We have an excellent selection of Alan Davie and William Gear paintings along with a selection of other artists including Gillian Ayres and Alan Reynolds. In sculpture we have a selection of pieces by Reg Butler and Robert Adams.

We very much look forward to meeting existing and new clients at the gallery, which is open by appointment only at 17 Clifford Street.
